Smart Storage Solutions for Clutter-Free Bathrooms

Storage may not always be at the very top of your mind when thinking about bathroom design, however an organized bathroom can double or even triple standard storage space, which simply makes daily life less stressful and more enjoyable. Creative storage solutions open up even the smallest of bathrooms. When organization, aesthetics and functionality meet in the bathroom, happiness ensues! Let’s dive into how to make the best clutter-free design choices for single-family homes and apartment/condo complexes alike.

From Floor to Ceiling

The most brilliant storage solutions for small spaces involve thinking vertically. Shelving above the toilet or from the counter upward, in-between the two mirrors, takes wasted space and puts it to excellent use. If you’re a renter or would prefer to avoid a permanent solution, stand-alone pieces of storage furniture often serve the same purpose and do it well. Over-the-toilet storage cabinets are the perfect way to conserve space in a spot that tends to only hold a piece of wall art, if anything. Even if the average person can’t reach cabinets that reach the ceiling, anyone can grab a step stool. Higher-up storage is perfect for items used seasonally. When done well, storage space in a bathroom can be doubled when vertical space is used.

Many newer apartment and condo buildings leave off minor closets such as linen closets in favor of providing more bedrooms or a larger family room, etc. If lost storage space is returned to the floorplan by way of built-in cabinets and wood shelving, then it’s a win for both the builder and the tenant/condo owner.

Open and Closed

While cabinets with doors hide away clutter, open storage is also useful. Occasionally it’s also necessary as doors require room to open and close. Open shelves used for like items such as boxes of tissue don’t tend to look cluttered. For small storage that must go on open shelves, use glass or ceramic jars for their fabulous organizational and decorative qualities. Another solution to tidy up open storage is to use a curtain strung along a wire or hung on a curtain rod to hide open storage. This nicely negates the need for a door and the fabric adds a soft decorative touch to a bathroom. Be careful to not overdo the closed storage, however, as that will result in a top-heavy look. Mixing open and closed storage is ideal for visual balance.

Adding built-in, recessed shelving to an area like the shower offers the perfect place to store shampoo and conditioner without having to add in an unappealing wire caddy. It’s already considered a must in upscale developments, but because it typically doesn’t add much to the cost of a project and elevates a bathroom instantly in the eyes of potential tenants or owners touring a model unit, it may soon be a must in economical units as well.

Remove a Door!

Thinking way outside the box, consider removing a door! While removing the door from a closet may seem counterintuitive, it’s a great way to create stylish open storage on a budget, plus create space for more storage in the area that would be used for opening and closing the door.

The Right Faucet Saves Space

Although not typically found in American bathrooms, consider choosing wall-mount faucet; they free up counter space and create a sleek and more open vanity area. Small footprint faucets are next in the list of faucets that save space. These are meant to be installed in mere inches of space and do very well with an undersized sink, should a small sink be part of the plan.

A built-in soap dispenser is often found in kitchens, so why not bathrooms as well? A dispenser gets rid of the need for extra bottles cluttering up the counter. While you’re at it, using sensor-activated bathroom faucets is rapidly becoming a must for their hygienic and aesthetic properties. Sensor faucets pair very well with any other tech-forward solution you may be planning for your next clutter-free bathroom design.

Think Small Solutions, Big Results

Even the smallest of features can make a world of difference in your overall design. For example, hooks! Hooks are incredibly economical and under-used by builders and homeowners everywhere. Stylish hooks on the back of doors or mounted on the wall prevent future clutter. They hold robes, discarded clothes, towels, decorations, and more. In this author’s opinion, every bathroom should come standard with at least six hooks.

Towel bars are next on the list of under-used and immensely valuable small solutions. Nearly all bathrooms have one towel bar, but more would be better! Instead of one towel bar at stomach-level, place one at waist-level and one more towel bar higher up, staggered or centered. Now, instead of hanging two towels, there’s room for four, all in the same basic space. Just be sure to space them with enough room for a standard towel to hang from the top and an oversized towel to hang from the bottom.

Wrapping it All Up

Keeping a clutter-free bathroom space isn’t just about keeping belongings to a minimum – it’s about thoughtful design and additions that keep all personal belongings in mind. For those in the multifamily housing industry, including smart storage solutions in each unit will set your project apart in the minds of potential buyers and renters. From choosing the right faucet to installing extra shelving, to picking the right mirror, these solutions all play into keeping a space as tidy and as functional as possible.
