Want a Grandmillennial Bathroom?Here’s How

From the imaginations of GenYers, a new style is born, grandmillenial. It’s surprising and confusing many outside its sphere of influence, if indeed any truly are. This may be because of the stereotype that the young love modern or ultra-modern. Like all stereotypes, it often fails and we’re so glad. This delightful aesthetic is pure fun and best of all, unhindered by set rules. We challenge you to take grandmillennial to the most unlikely and most overlooked space in the home, the bathroom.

What is Grandmillennial Style?

Grandmillenial combines “grandmother” and “millennial”; the look is exactly that – a posh grandma’s perfectly curated lifetime collection meets a young adult’s carefree imagination. Although one of the most difficult styles to pin down, it’s most easily identified by spotting a brilliant and balanced mix of old and new. For example, picture a living room with traditional wainscoting painted bright orange paired with a blue French toile wallpaper, set with minimalist modern art. When done well, a person should feel energized when in the room, but not overwhelmed. Some have pointed out that grandmillenial looks a lot like shabby chic or cottagecore, but it’s not quite that. At its heart, it’s less English cottage and more upstate New York. That said, the most striking component of grandmillennial is authenticity. Make it your own.

How to Bring Grandmillennial to the Bath

Dress the Walls

First, opt for more wood trim and less tile. Tile also comes in a wood look, if the water-proof qualities of tile matter more to you. Paneling on the wall, real or faked, will bring in an upscale traditional component and tends to set off busy wallpaper perfectly. Wallpaper or a painted mural on the walls is one of the easily spotted hallmarks of grandmillenial style. While it’s not vital to throw in a ton of color, why not? Monochromatic is simply not done here. Crown moulding completes the framing of the walls and is easier to DIY than you’d think. As long as you can cut a straight line through a miter box, it will look glorious.

Dwell on the Bath

Next, consider the shower or tub. Morning or nighttime bathing is much more of a self-care ritual if you love your surroundings, after all! If you have a large budget and lots of space, a claw foot bathtub or a minimalist stand-alone tub is a striking addition. A floor-mounted bathtub faucet, like the Pioneer Single Handle Floor Mount Freestanding Tub Trim Set | Pioneer Industries screams elegance with a crisp design and will balance the busier parts of the room. But even a bathtub/shower combination can be dressed up with a thick canvas-like shower curtain in a delicate print, left open enough to leave a peek at a showerhead, handle and faucet combination. Consider a more traditional look if your design has leaned toward modern thus far. An ideal choice is the Olympia Single Handle Tub/Shower Trim Set | Pioneer Industries, whose curved trim plates add a noticeably elegant slant.

Mix Beauty and Convenience at the Counter

The most popular choice for cabinets and counters in grandmillennial style is a stand-alone piece and the two sinks are often separate units. If that’s not an option, dress up the cabinets as much as possible and opt for painted wood over stained. Although marble countertops are undeniably beautiful, they stain easily and no one wants to add more cleaning time into the day. Synthetic stone is a worry-less, enjoy-more choice. Put the same amount of care into your faucet finish choice as well to increase enjoyment overall, such as a PVD brushed gold for glamor or matte black for a more subtle look. We love the idea of an ultra-mod brushed gold faucet with sensor like the Central Brass Single Hole Deck Mount Electronic Sensor Faucet | Pioneer Industries and matching soap dispenser, Central Brass Single Hole Deck Mount Electronic Sensor Soap Dispenser | Pioneer Industries. Imagine this mounted in a white counter with matte black cabinets – incredible!

Finish with Fabrics and Art

When your more costly, near permanent fixtures, are in place, it’s time to think small. Group small pieces of art together on the wall and if you can’t find something you love, your budget was spent, or you simply want to add in a piece of your heart to complete the look, creating your own masterpieces is as grandmillenial “yes!” One of our designers used pages from a coloring book for grown-ups, The Colouring Book of Edinburgh by Eilidh Muldoon, in beautiful frames to add whimsy and a personal touch to a room. Cross-stitch art is making a comeback too and can be made into pillows if you’re lucky enough to have a window seat in your bathroom, or room for one. A vanity with an upholstered chair is something you’ll consider a must after you’ve had one. For the chair, a second-hand or charity shop can be a gold mine.
